We were running a fundraising golf day for Windermere Child and Family Services today at Kingston Heath when one of the major supporters of the event - Andrew Facey from Facey Industrial arrived in his state of the art helicopter. Knowing I do a lot of golf ocurse photography Andrew suggested I take a spin for 30 min or so and capture some images of the great Melbourne Sandbelt golf courses we have.
I did not have to be asked twice. Under the watchful piloting of Mark Slade we headed up into the sky and initially got some images of Kingston Heath before heading towards Yarra Yarra, Commonwealth, Huntingdale, Metropolitan, Victoria and Royal Melbourne.
When you see this region of Melbourne from the sky a couple of things stand out - firstly how amongst all of the greenery of these golf courses there is a lot of industrial activity - factories, offices, shopping centres that you don't notice (thankfully) when you are playing the golf course itself. The second is the proliferation of bunkers on each of the Sandbelt golf courses. They are covered in them and provide one of the distinctive features that these courses are renowned for around the world.
